Spring into Scotch Plains Girls Softball - Scotch Plains-Fanwood, NJ ...
Spring is just around the corner. The sun is shining, the temperature is rising. For many parents, the time has come to dig that old baseball bat and glove out of the garage and head out into the back yard to practice aim and pitch with the kids. Eager to help your children become more active and make new friends? For over 25 years, Scotch Plains girls, Kindergarten through eighth grade have been playing Rec League softball. ?
Organized by the Scotch Plains Recreation Department, the Girls Softball League is divided up into three divisions: K ? second grade, third and fourth grade, and fifth through eighth grade. ?Players within each division are split up into several teams. These teams will go on to play each other in April through June. The oldest division normally consists of eight to nine teams and the younger divisions usually consist of five to six teams each.
The Rec Department is still looking for volunteer coaches and assistant coaches, no experience necessary. There will be a few coaching clinics in April so that first time coaches can learn essential skills and techniques.
?We never turn away coaches. If anyone wants to volunteer we will certainly set that up. The coaches and the parents who participate in this program are very encouraging,? Recreation Supervisor, Stephen Dahl said. ?This is a fun league. We have established that everyone gets a chance to play, so it is not as cut throat as a competitive team that travels to different states. We have never had any issues with our coaches or parents.?
Softball girls, who sign up for the K-2 division will focus on learning how to play the game, learning the rules of softball as well as how to hit, throw and play in the field. The practice schedule for this division is to be determined. The third through fourth grade division will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and Saturday mornings.
?We have about 100 kids signed up so far,? Dahl stated. ?The K ? 2 division will focus on the fundamentals of softball, while the older girls will have the opportunity to compete in a playoffs game at the end of the season.?
The oldest softball girls will begin the season with a few practices and then spend the rest it playing two to three games a week, competing against other Scotch Plains Rec league teams in their age division. This division meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights, and Saturday mornings. Dahl expressed that parents should not hesitate to enroll a nonathletic or first time softball player in the program.
?The philosophy of our league is that everyone participates and every team makes the playoffs. One of the good things about the Recreation softball program is that our rules state that every player has to play a designated amount of time. Just because your child has never picked up a softball before does not mean that they will be sitting on the bench and just watch other kids play. Everyone gets a chance in this program,? he said.
Softball registration will end on March 16. The registration fee for the two oldest divisions is $80. The fee for the youngest division is $65. Scotch Plains residents can register online by visiting www.scotchplainsnj.com, and clicking the Community Pass link on the left hand side of the page. You can pay online using a Visa or Mastercard or you can visit the Recreation Department in the Scotch Plains Municipal Building on Park Avenue. Kayak adds TripAdvisor reviews to hotel search

If you?re the type of traveler who searches for hotels on Kayak.com and then clicks over to TripAdvisor.com to read reviews from other travelers, the two companies would like you to stop.
Clicking from one site to the other, that is.
On Thursday, the sites unveiled a new arrangement in which the results from Kayak searches will include TripAdvisor reviews. Combining meta-search and user reviews, the companies hope to streamline the user experience and adapt to the changing landscape of online travel.
?We?re very comprehensive in search, but TripAdvisor has great content that people find very valuable,? said Robert Birge, Kayak?s chief marketing officer. ?This is just one more thing to add into the mix to help people find the right hotel for them.?
Under the new arrangement, TripAdvisor content will be another filter that people can toggle on or off. The results can also be ordered according to their TripAdvisor ranking, which brings up the review site?s familiar, five-category (Excellent to Terrible) bar charts.
The announcement is among Kayak?s ongoing efforts to augment its meta-search offerings. In October, the site added reviews from Frommer?s and Budget Travel, which can also be toggled on or off based on users? preferences.
?Some people don?t like user reviews,? said Birge. ?We?re giving people the choice depending on what kind of content they want to read.?
Kayak, of course, is not the first website to incorporate TripAdvisor ratings. Spun off from Expedia.com in December, the site's reviews appear on the websites of more than 250 companies, including hotels, airlines and online travel agencies.
But the move can also be seen as the latest skirmish in a battle that pits Kayak and TripAdvisor against Google, which has clearly set its sights on online travel with a series of acquisitions (ITA Software, Zagat) and new products, including Google Flights and Google Hotel Finder.
?There?s still a large percentage of travelers who haven?t heard of Kayak,? said Norm Rose, president of Travel Tech Consulting Inc. ?Brand recognition is a challenge that they constantly face.?
Integrating TripAdvisor?s 60 million reviews may be a powerful tool in that regard. Consider a recent search for the EPIC Hotel in Miami. Pre-integration, Kayak had all of 10 reviews; TripAdvisor, 928.
That kind of volume carries a lot of weight, says Ryan Williams, director of client services, travel, for Compete, a ?digital intelligence? company. ?If TripAdvisor can help consumers trust [Kayak?s] content, then why wouldn?t they use it?? he said. ?It?s just one more reason to use Kayak as your search engine.?
Of course, it should come as no surprise that Google is also incorporating reviews into Hotel Finder, although on a much smaller scale. Previously aggregating reviews from across the web ? including those from TripAdvisor until they were pulled last summer ? the site now only includes reviews from users with Google accounts. (There are currently 16 such reviews for the EPIC Hotel.)
?Reviews are also part of what Google is about now so there?ll be a natural competition there,? said Rose.
?It?s a fight over the online travel pie, which is only growing very slowly,? said Williams. ?It might take two or three big, known brands to work together to change the landscape, improve the experience and actually grow the pie.?

Painter William Theophilus Brown dies at age 92 (AP)
SAN FRANCISCO ? William Theophilus Brown, a painter who enjoyed success for more than half-a-century and was closely associated with the San Francisco Bay area's "figurative" movement, has died. He was 92.
Brown died Wednesday in his apartment at a San Francisco high-rise retirement community, gallery owner Thomas Reynolds told the San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/zRdvAj). He said Brown painted and took art classes until the end of his life.
Brown's partner of nearly 50 years, the celebrated artist Paul Wonner, died in 2008.
Brown was part of the figurative movement that art historians recognize as a period during the mid-20th century when artists moved away from extreme abstractionism and included some realism in their portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco are among the institutions that exhibit his paintings.
He was born in Illinois and trained at Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley.
Brown had his first solo exhibition at the Felix Landau Gallery in 1957. A year earlier, he had attracted national attention when Life magazine published three of his paintings featuring football players in motion.
Brown, who professionally went by the name Theophilus, told the Chronicle in October that he moved to the Bay area during the 1950s in part because he needed to separate himself from artistic luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, and Willem de Kooning, with whom he socialized after World War II.
"I moved here because I was orbiting around all of these famous people, and I needed to find out who I was," he said.
He befriended younger artists and poked fun at himself. Attorney Matt Gonzalez, a former city supervisor who had a ritual of spending weekends with Brown, working in the artist's studio and then going out to eat oysters and drink fine whiskey, said he last saw his friend on Saturday.
"I took him 36 oysters Saturday night and we shared dinner," Gonzalez said. "He had a good appetite and was in good spirits. But he couldn't leave the apartment, and he was clear that if he couldn't go to his studio and make art anymore, he didn't want to live. So it was time."
A private memorial was being planned.

BP hikes dividend after strong fourth quarter (AP)
LONDON ? BP PLC has raised its quarterly dividend by 14 percent after posting double-digit gains in profit and revenue in the last three months of 2011 despite further big payments to compensate for the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
For the three months ending Dec. 31, BP reported a profit of $7.69 billion, up 38 percent from the $5.57 billion posted a year earlier. Revenue was up 15 percent at $96.3 billion.
Replacement cost profit, a closely watched industry measure, was 65 percent higher at $7.6 billion.
"2012 will be a year of increasing investment and milestones as we build on the foundations laid last year," said CEO Bob Dudley.
"As we move through 2013 and 2014, we expect financial momentum will build as we complete payments into the Gulf of Mexico Trust Fund, restore high-value production and bring new projects on stream."
The fund Dudley referred to is the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Trust, created in 2010 to pay victims of the spill. BP had paid $15.1 billion of the $20 billion it's supposed to put into the fund as of Dec. 31. The fund has paid out about $6.7 billion in claims.
For the full year, BP reported a profit of $39.8 billion compared to a loss of $3.7 billion in 2010; replacement cost profit was $23.9 billion compared with a loss of $4.9 billion in the previous year.
The hike in the quarterly dividend, to 8 cents per share, is the first increase since BP resumed paying dividends a year ago.
"The dividend is still far from the historical heady heights, however, whilst the ongoing fallout from the Gulf of Mexico spill is a distraction," said Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown. "More positively, the fund put aside to finance these claims seems sufficient, whilst further planned divestments will enable BP to focus more strategically on higher growth opportunities."
BP shares were up 0.3 percent in early trading in London at 4.91 pounds.
"It was good to see a dividend increase with the results and it is a good sign of confidence in the improving operational performance," said Tony Shephard, analyst at Charles Stanley & Co., who rated the shares as "hold."
"BP's share valuation is low relative to the other oil and gas majors but it still faces uncertainty over the Gulf of Mexico tragedy."
BP faces its day in court in New Orleans on Feb. 27 with the opening of a limitation and liability trial over the spill.
BP PLC, rig owner Transocean Ltd. and cement contractor Halliburton Co. have been fighting each other over who was responsible for causing the blowout, which was finally halted in July 2010. U.S. investigators have said that BP bears ultimate responsibility for the spill, but has faulted all three companies to some degree.
"We continue to believe that BP will settle sooner rather than later given the U.S. presidential election and we see a 50 percent chance this will occur in the next few weeks," said Stuart Joyner, analyst at Investec Securities.
BP has reached settlements with some of its partners and contractors including $4 billion from Anadarko Petroleum Corp., which had a 25 percent stake in the well; $1.1 billion from MOEX, which had a 10 percent stake; and $75 million from Weatherford International Ltd. which supplied casing components.
"As I have said before, we are prepared to settle if we can do so on fair and reasonable terms, but equally, if this is not possible, we are preparing vigorously for trial," Dudley said.
BP says it currently has five deepwater rigs working on BP-operated fields in the Gulf of Mexico plus an appraisal well. It expects to have three more rigs working in the Gulf by the end of the year.

Government health spending seen hitting $1.8 trillion (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Government spending for Medicare, Medicaid and other healthcare programs will more than double over the next decade to $1.8 trillion, or 7.3 percent of the country's total economic output, congressional researchers said on Tuesday.
In its annual budget and economic outlook, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said that even under its most conservative projections, healthcare spending would rise by 8 percent a year from 2012 to 2022, mainly as a result of an aging U.S. population and rising treatment costs. It will continue to be a key driver of the U.S. budget deficit.
Medicare, the federal healthcare program for the elderly, accounts for about half the projected growth, with Medicaid at roughly one-third and the remainder attributed to new federal subsidies to help lower income Americans purchase insurance under President Barack Obama's 2010 healthcare overhaul.
Spending is expected to dip this year to $847 billion, from $856 billion in 2011, because extra federal money to help cash-strapped states pay for Medicaid ended last July. The healthcare program for the poor, Medicaid is jointly funded by federal and state governments.
But researchers warned that the longer term prospects for rising healthcare spending could have dire consequences for the U.S. deficit when combined with the cost of Social Security, if current revenue levels remain unchanged.
"The resulting deficits will increase federal debt to unsupportable levels," the CBO report said.
"To prevent that outcome, policymakers will have to substantially restrain the growth of spending for those programs, raise revenues above their historical share of GDP, or pursue some combination of those two approaches."
The data present the latest sobering news for Obama and lawmakers in Congress, who have spent months wrangling over how best to reduce a federal deficit that is expected to hover above $1 trillion in 2012 for the fourth year in a row.
The report is likely to feature prominently in the 2012 presidential campaign, where Republicans Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are vying for the support of fiscal conservatives to win the party nomination and face Obama in the November general election.
CBO also cited the cost of granting physicians a long-term reprieve from a Medicare reimbursement mechanism that is scheduled to impose a 27 percent pay cut on doctors in March.
The report said keeping physician payments at current levels through 2022 would cost the federal government $316 billion, up from last year's CBO estimate of $290 billion.
Lawmakers in Congress are trying to reach a deal on a one- or two-year "doc fix" under Medicare.
Foregoing reduced payment rates would cost the government $9 billion in 2012 and $19 billion 2013. The charge would rise sharply in later years to $47 billion in 2022 and $15 billion in additional debt service costs.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, the music icon passed away with a pair of life insurance policies in his name - and because the suicide took place more than two years after he signed them, they cannot be challenged by California law and around $300,000 will be handed out to Don's ex-wife, Viktoria.

The couple got divorced in 2009, following a conviction for Don on a charge of domestic abuse and an allegation against his wife that she pepper sprayed him on numerous occasions.
